Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya praised the junior middleweight fight between Canelo Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo as a clash of "two Mexican warriors in the ring" during a Wednesday media workout for Alvarez in San Diego.

The 23-year-old Alvarez will face Angulo on March 8 on Showtime Pay Per View at The MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where Alvarez was dethroned as RING 154-pound champion following a majority decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September.

"With two Mexican warriors in the ring, you may go in with a game plan," said De La Hoya. "But once one of them gets hit, well, 'Viva Mexico.' It'll be bombs away."

The media workout was De La Hoya's first public appearance at a boxing event since admitting himself into rehabitation for substance abuse a mere days prior to Mayweather-Alvarez.

"I learned a lot from the Mayweather fight," said Alvarez, "not only physically, but mentally. It was a great learning experience. This camp may not look that different but I've been applying everything I learned into this camp and trying to refine some of the things I do.

"There are hard fights, and there are difficult fights. This is going to be a very hard fight, a grueling fight. I know Angulo is training like he never has before. I am not thinking of any other fighter or any future fight. My only focus is on Angulo and March 8. This is a really tough fight and it is the only fight I think about."

On the Alvarez-Angulo undercard, Alvarez's older brother, Ricardo "Dinamita" Alvarez, 32, will face hammer-fisted WBC lightweight titleholder Omar Figueroa.

The card will feature IBF 154-pound titleholder Carlos Molina's first defense against prospect Jermell Charlo, the 23-year-old twin brother of unbeaten junior middleweight contender Jermell Charlo, as well as WBC 122-pound beltholder Leo Santa Cruz in a defense against Cristian Mijares.

A fourth undercard bout matches Jorge Linares against Nihito Arakawa on Showtime Extreme prior to the pay per view.

"You really don't want to miss this event. From top to bottom, there are great, action-packed fights," said De La Hoya. "Last year, I thought we put on the most exciting fights, and we're continuing that with our first pay-per-event in 2014."
