Mayweather, Alvarez purses
LAS VEGAS — THE RING’s No. 1-rated pound-for-pound fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. will earn a record guarantee of a $41.5 million purse compared to $5 million for RING and WBC junior middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez for thier Saturday clash at the MGM Grand, according to Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Kizer pointed out that the amounts for Mayweather and Alvarez “are only the guarantees,” adding, “of course, both guys will make more” thanks to their upsides of the pay per view sales.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer confirmed as much to ESPN.com.
“He will end up making more than $5 million. He is going to make a significant upside because of the pay-per-view,” said Schaefer of Alvarez. “It doesn’t matter that he is getting $5 million, because he will make millions and millions more because I guaranteed him money on the pay-per-view, but I don’t want to say how much.”
On the undercard, THE RING’s 140-pound champ Danny Garcia will pocket a guaranteed $1.5 million compared to $800,000 for No. 1-rated Lucas Matthysse, according to Kizer.
For another fight, IBF junior middleweight titleholder Ishe Smith is earning $250,000 compared to $100,000 for challenger Carlos Molina.
