Harvin Aguirre sensed a distance fight was in store after Alberto Mosquera beat the count during the bout’s lone knockdown.

The realization led to a comfortable unanimous decision victory for the Panama City-based Nicaraguan prospect. Scores were 98-90, 97-91 and 97-91 for Aguirre in their ESPN Knockout main event Friday evening at Coliseo de Combates in Panama City, Panama.

Mosquera entered the ring for the first time in more than a year. The Panamanian southpaw was determined to prove his experience was too much for the 24-year-old welterweight prospect.

Aguirre rode out a few rough early moments to establish his dominance. He was particularly effective with his right uppercut, which landed with conviction in rounds two and three.

The only knockdown of the night came late in the fifth round. A left hook to the temple by Aguirre was followed by a right hand upstairs and left hook to Mosquera’s body. Mosquera went down on a slightly delayed reaction as a result. Aguirre let out a yell and then taunted the fallen Panamanian before referee Hector Afu summoned him to a neutral corner.

The second half of the fight was not quite as intense. Mosquera landed the occasional chin shot, as Aguirre’s relaxed defense remains a liability. Aguirre was still able to land in combination but had a harder time than in the first half with fending off Mosquera’s offense.

It was enough of a momentum shift to slightly tighten up two scorecards. However, Aguirre was never in danger of losing the fight.

The win advanced Aguirre’s record to 13-0, with nine knockouts. A three-fight knockout streak came to a close, though the rising prospect was able to add a notable name to his résumé.

Mosquera fell to 28-7-2, with 16 knockouts. The loss was the third within his last four starts. He suffered a fourth round knockout to Puerto Rico’s Derrieck Cuevas (27-1-1, 19 KOs) last Aug. 4 in this very same venue.

Friday’s show was presented by All-Star Boxing, Inc.
