A TALE OF TWO COVERS

The Ring produced two covers in anticipation of Muhammad Ali’s challenge to undefeated reigning heavyweight champion George Foreman in Zaire, Africa, in 1974. The first cover (based on the closed circuit poster), for the September issue, previewed the historic showdown prior to its original September 25 date. When Foreman suffered a cut in sparring that forced what was then the richest prize fight in history to be moved to October 30, a second cover was needed to celebrate the postponed “Rumble In The Jungle” on its new date.
